One Place for Your Claim Appeals

November 5, 2026

Starting November 14, 2026, send and track Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska claim appeals in one secure place through Availity Essentials.

Why it Matters

Use Availity Essentials as your first option for submitting claim appeals to Premera. You’ll see when Premera receives your appeal, track its status, and view the final decision in Availity Essentials.

How it Works

After reviewing a claim in Availity Essentials, run a Claim Status transaction. Find the claim and select Dispute Claim.

What to Expect

When you submit, make sure to do the following:

  • Make sure it’s an appeal. Send an appeal when you disagree with a claim determination and want Premera to reconsider its decision. If you need to update or correct claim information, submit a corrected claim instead. Don’t use the appeals feature for general correspondence.
  • Choose the right reason. Select the appeal reason that best describes your request.
  • Explain the issue. Clearly state why you disagree with the claim determination.
  • Add supporting documentation. Include all relevant supporting documents.
  • Include member authorization when required. If you’re appealing on a member’s behalf, include the required member authorization form.

Get it Right the First Time

Missing member authorization means Premera will close and return the appeal. You’ll need to resubmit it with the required authorization. The turnaround time starts when Premera receives a valid appeal.

Don’t submit the same appeal twice. If you’ve already sent an appeal by mail or fax, don’t submit it through Availity Essentials. Duplicate appeals may delay processing.

Use the appeals feature only for appeal-related correspondence and documentation. Examples of when you would not use the appeals feature include the following:

  • Claims denied as duplicates.
  • Claim denied because additional information is required.
  • Claim denied because the member’s primary explanation of benefits is required.

Your Next Steps

  1. Sign in to Availity Essentials and go to Claims and Payments.
  2. Run a Claim Status transaction and find the claim.
  3. Select Dispute Claim.
  4. Choose the appeal reason, explain why you’re appealing, and attach supporting documents.
  5. Send the appeal.

After you submit, use the appeals feature in Availity Essentials to track it through the final decision. Acknowledgment and decision letters will also be available in Availity Essentials.

Submitting through Availity Essentials doesn’t speed up appeal processing. Premera will continue reviewing appeals in the order received.
