Maternity Service Coding Changes Coming Soon

Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska is updating its maternity billing processes to align with new American Medical Association (AMA) coding requirements. Starting January 1, 2027, the changes will replace the current global maternity package with more detailed, service-specific billing. The new structure applies to prenatal care, labor management, delivery, and postpartum care.

What’s Changing

Maternity care services will no longer be reported using bundled global maternity codes. Instead, providers will bill individual services and visits separately using evaluation and management codes, and new maternity-specific codes for labor management and delivery services.

What This Means For You

• Routine prenatal and postpartum visits will be billed separately rather than as part of a single global maternity package.
• Delivery services will continue to be reported using delivery-specific Current Procedural Terminology^® (CPT) codes.
• New labor management codes will be used to report labor care services.
• Maternity services may appear differently on claims as of January 1, 2027.
• Routine prenatal and postpartum care may process differently on claims when billed separately from delivery services.
