Your Role in Breastfeeding Success
April 2, 2026
Starting June 1, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends breastfeeding support and referrals during pregnancy and after birth.
Why it Matters
When providers offer clear, ongoing support, more patients start breastfeeding, continue longer, and breastfeed exclusively. Support works best when it starts during pregnancy and continues after birth.
How to Help
Breastfeeding is measured by when it starts, how long it lasts, and whether the infant receives only breast milk. As a provider, you play a key role in supporting breastfeeding:
- Offer education and encouragement early.
- Refer patients to breastfeeding support when needed.
- Check in during and after pregnancy.
