Screening for Intimate Partner Violence and Abuse

April 2, 2026

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for intimate partner violence and caregiver abuse. This impacts women of reproductive age, including those who are pregnant or postpartum. It also applies to older adults and other vulnerable populations. Screening is included in preventive care updates coming June 1.

Why it Matters

Many patients don’t share experiences of violence unless asked. Early screening can reduce harm, improve health, and connect patients to help sooner.

What to Do

Keep screening simple, private, and supportive.

  • Use short, validated screening tools.
  • Ask questions in a private setting.
  • Respond with empathy and respect.

If the screening is positive, care works best when support follows.

  • Discuss safety next steps.
  • Share referrals and resources.
  • Document and plan follow-up care.
